HEPA filter units with high induction ceiling swirl diffusers or patented anti-smudging perforated horizontal discharge ceiling diffusers are used in applications in which high levels of mixing are required to remove contaminants by dilution and to prevent stagnant areas in which contaminants may accumulate. Both diffusers types create mixed airflow with an air change effectiveness of about unit (ACE ˜ 1), allowing contaminants to be effectively removed by fresh air dilution. HEPA filter equipped swirl diffusers discharge supply air with extremely high induction, thereby allowing enhanced levels of draught-free comfort to be achieved even in VAV applications discharging air at lower than normal supply air temperatures (Tsupply < 10°C). Operating swirl diffusers at such low supply air temperatures reduces the space humidity, minimising the risk of infectious diseases and the spread of mould spores. The patented anti-smudging perforated ceiling diffuser with HEPA filter creates an air cushion of clean air beneath the diffuser and adjoining ceiling surface, creating a barrier that prevents dirty room air from contaminating the diffuser and adjacent ceiling, typically characterised by ”smudge” marks on these surfaces. Laminar flow diffusers with HEPA filters are used above operating theatres and other critical areas to achieve the highest levels of cleanliness on and around the operating table or workspace by purging contaminants by means of a laminar plug-flow of air that “showers” onto the workspace in question with minimal mixing so as to prevent contamination of the supply air stream and workspace with dirty room air.
